SDX® Implementation at OSF Healthcare
In early 2024, Dr. James McGee was appointed as the founding director of the OSF HealthCare Cancer Institute. Since 1988, he has led research, innovation, clinical, and academic initiatives alongside Tom Cox, VP of Oncology Services, aiming to establish the institute as a leader in cancer care and research.
Under Dr. McGee’s leadership, the SDX® System was installed at OSF Healthcare’s proton center in Peoria, IL, treating around 12 patients daily as of June 2024. The SDX System enhances precision in tumor targeting and patient positioning, integrating seamlessly into CT simulations, verification scans, and proton treatment sessions. As an aid that facilitates patient breath-holds, this advanced technology allows the team to deliver precise treatments to tumors normally susceptible to respiratory motion, improving patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Dr. McGee’s notable achievements include collaborating on the Breakthrough Treatment Center and BEAT Cancer Research Initiative, focusing on early-phase cancer control and engineering advancements. He also directed the design of the Radiation Oncology facility. Dr. McGee holds a B.S. from Quincy College, an MD from Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University, and a Master’s in Health Care Management from Harvard School of Public Health.
The SDX System’s reliable performance will continue to support imaging and treatment procedures for all selected patients as the Cancer Institute ramps-up to capacity. The mobile SDX unit facilitates patient coaching, scanning, and treatment in three locations as needed, optimizing workflow and efficiency. Dr. McGee’s leadership in adopting cutting-edge technology like the SDX System solidifies OSF Healthcare’s reputation for excellence in cancer treatment and research.
