Respiratory Gating Techniques for Optimization of Lung Cancer Radiotherapy

Learn how the STIC 2003 project has highlighted the benefits of respiratory-gated conformal radiotherapy (RGRT) over conventional conformal radiotherapy for lung cancer treatment. Conducted from April 2004 to June 2008 across 20 French centers, this study assessed the clinical impacts of RGRT, demonstrating its feasibility and reproducibility. RGRT, particularly with deep inspiration breath-hold (DIBH) techniques like ABC and SDX systems, significantly increased lung volume and reduced dosimetric parameters predictive of pulmonary, cardiac, and esophageal toxicity. Clinically, this correlated with a substantial decrease in both acute and late toxicities in these areas. Pulmonary function parameters also showed trends towards reduced toxicity with RGRT. For a detailed exploration of how RGRT enhances patient outcomes by minimizing treatment-related toxicities, read the full article.
